I'd say the main reason I do it is if someone does download something illegal torrent/kiddie porn, it is linked to your IP address. And the argument in court that your router was open to anyone is not held up. So I guess for liability reasons you should slap a password on there.

Shutting down means closing all the apps/windows (porn, questionland) and having to reopen/relaunch them when you power back up. No power is used.

Hibernating is when you power down but all your apps (porn, questionland) are still up and open. When you power back up, they're all there for you to resume.

Standby is when your computer goes to 'sleep'. It's more like a catnap,it is still powered on. You just hit a key to 'wake it up'. All your apps are still there.

I have Comcast and only pay 35 bucks a month or so bundled with cable, but it's only 10-15 bucks a month more expensive by itself. Never drops, good with wireless/networking, and fastest available for the money.

If you want to go with Clear that's fine, but coverage sucks, wireless drops constantly, and it is WAY slower than what they advertise. Thank g-d it's non-committal and I only had to deal with their BS and high prices for decent speed for only a month.

FIOS is super fast and great, but way too expensive.

If you're just operating off a laptop and happen to be with Verizon, get one of their mobile web PC cards on the cheap with your plan; I've found theirs to be the most consistent of the 3G/4G cards, and you can use it anywhere in the country for the most part. Per minute use can be bundled and is low if you're not downloading too much; if you are that gets expensive quick, unfortunately.

Your best bet may be to offer your neighbor 10 bucks a month to use their wireless, if you really can't afford the 50 bucks a month.

You can download a free 30 day trial of After Effects from Adobe and alter the clips with time remapping or the TimeWarp plugin. It's pretty easy to do but I'm sure you could find a tutorial on a forum somewhere if you have trouble.

I used to be a canvasser for OSPIRG and Save the Children (which, we were informed during training, is not technically "soliciting" because the groups are non-profits), both terrible jobs that make you question your own self-worth with every door slammed shut.

Having knocked on hundreds of doors, I can tell you that in my experience, the best way to get the person off your porch while still leaving them with an intact sense of dignity is NOT to just interrupt with a "no" and slam the door, but to let them give the beginning of whatever shpeel and then be really direct in saying, "Hey, looks like a great cause, but I really don't have the money and I can't contribute. Good luck out there." Then shut the door. If they keep asking you questions as you shut the door (also part of the training!), just keep saying, "No! Thanks! Good luck!"

If I have a some free time and they seem like cool people, I'll say no and offer them some water or fruit. But that's just because I'm sympathetic.

Kyle! I had the same response. But Nestchick is right in her comment—the actual stat (according to Portland Public Schools and the Mayor's office) is that Portland schools have a 57 percent on time graduation rate. That means the 43 percent "dropout rate" could be described as "43 percent of Portland students don't finish school on time if at all."

I haven't been able to find stats on how many kids actually leave school altogether and never return (some of the kids who quit high school, for example, go into trade school programs or wind up taking the GED so it's hard it get accurate numbers on "real" dropouts) but it's definitely a good thing to look into.

When the Oregonian fact checked the dropout stats, they actually found that some schools had inflated their graduation rates. But the article didn't determine the actual graduation rate of those misleading schools. So, like I said, something good to look into.

Needless to say, the 57 percent graduation rate is appalling, even if it doesn't exactly mean 43 percent of students are quitting school.

Canon. I don't know what they have at that price point anymore, but I used to sell cameras. Canon is the most reliable, least flawed camera in general, especially the tiny Elph series. Just remember, you don't need more than like 6 or 8 megapixels. The sensor is no bigger than your pinky nail, so when they try to jam 12 million pixels on there, it only results in added grain. You can print larger than 8x10 at 6mp.

You don't care about digital zoom, only optical (you'll get 3x at that price), image stabilization is nice (but might cost more), and you want it to take a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The 150 price point might stick you with AA's, but get the li-ion if you can. Just keep it charged.

Seriously, Canon knows their shit. You'll find cheaper ones, but none of them will be as easy or good as the Canon. I'm including Nikon in my comparison, too. I never liked Nikon's point-and-shoots. Their SLRs on the other hand are very nice.

Are you talking about the "comments to answers"? It seems pretty smooth to me. It's not like the page re-loads when you click to read them. Just some javascript expand/contract action.
