Ha! Did you make my answer your favorite before OR after you realized I was being cheeky?

Wow, just realized I totally misread your answer as saying to include them if they're "really, really [good]." Damn, I'm lucky there's not much reading comprehension stuff on the GRE.

Thanks, I think you're right. My total was 1490/1600, and I decided not to include it; employers are more likely to see the "14" and think, "Eh, that's not so great," than they are to round it up and go, "Wow, 1500, she knows her shit!"

Of course, I like the self-esteem-inflating buzz of rounding it up to 1500 in my head, but a stranger at a tutoring center might think I'm desperate and awkward for volunteering a score that's probably just mediocre among the over-achieving GRE tutor demographic.

For now, I'll stick to privately relishing my $160 test score as a pick-me-up on bad days. And maybe, just maybe, it'll actually come in handy on a grad school application someday!

hey i just wrote this in a comment to the person above you but i dunno if you'll get that so here ya go:

it's been about 6 months since i first posted my question. a lot has happened since then. my husband went to fire academy, emt school and is now in paramedic school. he's actually testing for the portland fire dept. THIS weekend!!! so yeah, we're definitely planning on one or both of us having a job before we move there. if he doesn't get on the fire dept. he may try to work for an ambulance. we won't move their without jobs though. we don't have the money to do that.

as for me i work at half price books. did you ever go there when you lived here in texas? i really like it and i'm wondering if my experience there would help me get a job at powell's bookstore in portland. i know it must be really hard to get a job there. if my husband is working i won't HAVE to have a job but it was just a thought in case i wanted to work there. i'm ok with just volunteering places too.

i asked the person above you this to- do you think people are fairly friendly up there in general? you know how it is in texas! so i don't have to explain what i mean. i'm just worried that i'll try to talk to people and they'll be like wtf...who are you? lol

anyway, thanks for the info! fingers crossed for my husband! maybe we'll see you up there someday! :D

hey! well it's been about 6 months since i first posted my question. a lot has happened since then. my husband went to fire academy, emt school and is now in paramedic school. he's actually testing for the portland fire dept. THIS weekend!!! so yeah, we're definitely planning on one or both of us having a job before we move there. if he doesn't get on the fire dept. he may try to work for an ambulance. we won't move their without jobs though. we don't have the money to do that.

that sucks that people were rude to you when you told them you just moved there and wanted to make friends. i totally pictured doing that myself! i don't wanna sit around acting like i've lived there forever and already have friends when i don't lol

you said they still weren't receptive to you when you said, yes, i have a job!? that doesn't make sense. seems like they'd get over it as soon as they knew you had a job.

i'm wondering if these people that are so worried about newcomers without jobs are people who were born and raised there or people who moved there themselves from other places. i would hope it was the former...that'd be more understandable. but everyone in the states has a right to move wherever they want and if they show up without a job then whatever- that's their own problem right? some people just have to escape their town or state under any cost. there are places in this country that are quite stifling and oppressive. maybe native portlanders don't really get that since they live in such an awesome city.

anyway i'm off my soapbox lol thanks for the advice! i have 2 adorable dogs so maybe that'll help! ;o) best of luck making new friends! maybe we'll see you there someday! :D

ps- where did you move from? and are people there nice and friendly in general? i'm coming from texas where everyone is expected to be friendly so i'm a bit worried about people being like wtf who are you and why are you talking to me? when i get there lol

I don't know your skill set, but I agree with trying the temp agencies. There are jobs out there (I hope, I'm looking too!)
