How and where do you rent KEGs in Portland?

I live in SE 'round 39th and Hawthorne. I went to Fred Meyer and inquired about renting a keg. They had no idea and suggested I inquired at bars. I've recently moved here and need to know

- where and how do I rent a keg for a party in Portland?
- where are the best deals (I don't have the trash can or tap)
- any other tips/ things to know about the process here.

Thanks in advance!

Belmont Station (4500 SE Stark) will solve your problem. They always have a number on hand, and can order anything you want if you give them a few days. Or try the Lutz Tavern at SE Woodstock and 48th. Both rent taps and buckets and have helpful staff, but the Station tends to have better variety and is a little cheaper. For the best deals on micros, call some of the breweries. MacTarnahan's always has super-cheap dock sales and you can pick up whenever. Most of the others you have to call and reserve to be sure you're get what you want.

As Spudboy said, http://www.columbia-dist.com/. Hit up the NW location.

They are only open weekdays until 4 I think so call ahead. Kegs have something like a 12 buck deposit. Tap is maybe a $20 deposit?

It's out on Yeon in NW. You have to go around to the back to a kind of random door next to the loading docks. Make sure you have ID and an address where you'll tap the keg. The cops can check up on you, and if you have it tapped elsewhere you'll get busted.

Ask about dock specials. You can get reeeeallly cheap deals on random stuff sometimes.

In addition to spudboy's, I'd also suggest Pyramid Brewing.

Trash can + tap... well you' can hopefully borrow a can from a friend, and most places will lend you the tap with a deposit.

The high-price option is Belmont station, and here's their page: http://www.belmont-station.com/kegs_css.html

You'll probably note anywhere you go that it's costlier to fill a keg here than in other states you might have had parties in. Due to extra taxes and OLCC bullshit, it's probably easier just to buy cases of beer/ice....

I've gotten kegs from the Bridgeport brewery in NW (love me that Bridgeport IPA!). Way cheaper than Belmont Station and they let you keep it for 2 weeks.

Depending on how many people you're having, consider the canister keg (which, apparently, is also called a Corny Keg!). Picture what soda syrup comes in for restaurants. I've bought these from Bridgeport Brewing in NW and they contain about 40 pints versus a full keg's 120. The size makes it really easy to manage - would fit in most household garbage cans for icing down.

I bought some directly from Deschutes at their Pearl brewpub. About as cheap as you can get for something local.

The best deals are going directly to the brewer. That'll save you about anywhere from $20 to $50. You will want to make sure to get a tap with the keg, some brewers forget this and it can be a hassle if forgotten.
If the keg you want isn't from a local brewer than go the route some other people suggested and goto a store that focuses on beer. I'd recommend the Belmont Station since it is in your neck of the woods. I have found that Johns' Marketplace is a little bit cheaper in my experience.
As for a can, I'm pretty sure you'll just have to goto a store and buy one along with the ice.
