If I started such a thing, would a Portland Scrabble Club work?

Assume I have the tools to promote it. I wonder about the interest to sustain it.

I was a member of the Meetup group and when I suggested they vary times/locations (not everyone can be in NoPo on a Saturday morning) I was told to set up my own group. Hmph. That group meets at the restaurant owned by the guy who (I think) pays the fees for the Meetup site.

There are LOTS of Scrabble players in Portland. I think there's a group at the Lucky Lab on Sundays. One of the national champions lives here (2005?).

A few questions: What dictionary are you planning on playing? OSPD or TWL? Do you play at ISC and if so, what is your rating? I tend to hover just below 1000 but can dip as low as 700 and sometimes I break that 1K barrier.

Interest to sustain it depends on how hardcore you make it. The more hardcore, the more committed people are and you'll get a good group of regulars. Play tournament rules.

Tiger's Cafe on Belmont does Monday evening board games. First 10 or so people who start a board game get a free appetizer. They have a couple Scrabble games and we've gotten in great matches with other Portlanders!

So come on down, bring an additional Scrabble game if you have one and we'll get this thing moving! Plus, Tiger's has awesome falafel and great brews.

Concordia New Seasons hosts a Scrabble night every Tuesday. The store even provides free "light refreshments."

I've never attended, but when I've walked by on my way to the cookies, there have usually been between 4-6 people playing Scrabble in the seating area. Does that count as a club?

    Bring it, don't sing it.

    There isn't already one?

I know some people who have played serious Scrabble in club-like settings in Portland.

Maybe you should specify what you mean by "club."

Hi... i run a meetup group called Scrabble PDX. I took over the group (it was a bloodless coup) about 6 months ago, and i'm hoping to make it a 1-stop resource for Scrabble events in the Portland area. We schedule events, but we also list events that others hold (and we label them appropriately, of course)

    You can find it at...
    http://www.meetup.com/ScrabblePDX/

I should mention there is no cost to join or to attend any of our events (other than whatever food or drink you buy)

Feel free to contact me through there... Barry

It would and it has, just google Portland Scrabble. How about a salacious [11 points] Scrabble, HUMP meets Word Play, down and dirty on the tiles.
