What should I replace my backpack with?

This is really two questions:

1) When does it become socially unacceptable for a man to wear a backpack? Or is it totally acceptable in perpetuity!

2) If not, what are my options for a replacement? Does anyone make a practical and reasonable looking man bag?

Years of running around with a messenger bag started taking its toll on my back. I recently made the switch back to a backpack. I initially considered the same conflict that you describe. I'm 34 years old and I do not want to look like a little boy. But, then also, fuck that, I'm 34 years old and I don't give a shit if you think I look silly. My back doesn't hurt any more and my backpack is sweet.
    Backpacks forever!

Levi Strauss does. I bought mine for $6.99 at Goodwill.

    1. Backpacks are fine in theory but you should know that the conversation below has never ever happened in real life;

Girl 1: hey check out that hot guy over there!
    Girl 2: which one?
Girl 1: the one with the backpack.

    2. A messenger bag is totally acceptable.

A backpack is fine. If you live your life based on people judging you for how you carry your stuff, you'll get as stuck in the mud as they are.

Style wise, a backpack doesn't go well with everything but that would be a personal choice.

    1) Backpack

    2) Messenger bag

    3) Duffel bag

    4) Roll/gym bag

    5) Brief case

    6) Stuff sack

    7) Hefty garbage bag

Types of bags aren't all that different, what may set them apart is the construction, style, decoration etc that the individual manufacturer puts into it. Make a side by side comparison of packs by Osprey and Jansport, you will be able to tell the difference.

The store "Michael Allen's" usually has a variety of "Man Bags" and "The Territory Ahead", another store, offers a few. I don't know if they have any stores in the Portland area but if they don't, there's online shopping.
